MAIDUGURI, North-East, Nigeria – Borno State Command of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) has destroyed 20 metric tonnes (equivalent to 20,000 kg) of psychotropic substances and illicit drugs seized by the Agency in different operations in the State.
The exercise which had the state Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, NDLEA boss Colonel Mustapha Abdallah (rtd) led other topmost officials for the ceremonial destruction that took place in Muna, along Maiduguri-Gamboru road on Friday, August 21, 2020.
Other dignitaries who attended the exercise include: the Shehu of Borno represented by the Shettima Kanuribe; GOC 7 Division Nigerian Army, Brigadier General A K. Ibrahim; other security heads, members of Borno State Executive Council and and religious leaders.
According to official from the Agency, a Federal High Court had given order for the destruction.
The Governor in his remarks, pledged continued support to the Agency’s fight against illicit drugs in the state; and immediately directed the rehabilitation of the FG owned staff quarters of NDLEA in Maiduguri, as an intervention from the state government.
He expressed worries over the quantity of drugs intercepted by NDLEA in the state, and described as alarming the negative impact of drug abuse particularly among students which are not limited to extreme violence, rape, sucide, stealing, school dropout, poor academic performances and poor health.
