World Toilet Day: CAMAC donates Menstrual Emergency Kits to Kaduna College

KADUNA, North-West, Nigeria – To mark the 2020 World Toilet Day celebration, Center for Media Advocacy for Mother and Child, (CAMAC), on Thursday donated “Menstrual Emergency Kits” to Braintrust College, Kurmin Mashi, in Kaduna North Local Government Area of the state.
The group had on October 15, launched the campaign tagged: “Period Friendly” facility for public places at Kantin Kwari Market and Motor Park in Kaduna, where it also donated handwashing materials like soaps, buckets, dustbins, detergents and disinfectants for use by people on transit, market women and girls.
The menstrual emergency kits box provides everything needed by women of menstrual age to go with the flow, even if it happened at public places like school, office, market, motor park, worship centre, the gym, etc; while period friendly facility are those facilities where women are comfortable to use during their monthly menstrual period.
Addressing female students and management of the college, Executive Director of CAMAC, Alex Uangbaoje, noted that women and young girls can only be comfortable in public places during their monthly menstrual period if the facilities are suitable for use and the required sanitary materials are available.
He tasked both government and private school owners not to only build toilets, but to also make them period friendly for the sake of the girl child.
The CAMAC boss who was represented by his Program Officer, Christie Alex, urged the girls to always ensure they maintain personal hygiene before, during and after their menstrual periods.
“As young girls, always ensure you don’t use unclean items as pad during your menstrual period where sanitary pads are not available. Instead use clean items and disposed them properly to avoid infectious diseases.
“You need to wash and keep your toilets clean because of the sensitivity of your bodies. most importantly use disinfectant, especially public toilets.
“Avoid open defecation otherwise, you will be causing pollution to your environment and it’s unhygienic for young girls like you,” he cautioned.
Responding, on behalf of the students, Health Prefect of the college, Asmahu Abdulahi, lamented the bad state of toilets in the college which forced students to practice open defecation.
She called on management of the college to quickly arrest the ugly situation to safeguard the health of the students.
Also, the Guidance and Counselling Officer of the college, Mrs Ezekiel Joy, while receiving the items appreciated CAMAC for the choice of her college as a beneficiary of its programme.
She pledged the College’s commitment to ensuring that the Emergency Kits Box is maintained and the toilet facility upgraded to be more period friendly.
In the same vein, Principal of the college, Mr Godwin Ogar, commended CAMAC for the kind gesture, and promised to ensure students abide by what they are taught.
Items donated includes; Menstrual Emergency Kits Box, Sanitary Pads, Painkiller Drugs, Waste Bin, Detergents and Disinfectants.
The Global World Toilet Day is commemorated every November 19. This year’s theme is: “Sustainable Sanitation and Climate Change.”
