KADUNA, North-West, Nigeria – The Director, African Climate Reporters, Dr Piman Hoffman, has cautioned butchers in the country to halt the culture of roasting slaughtered animals with burnt tyres to avoid triggering climate change.

He made the call recently during a chart with Journalists in Kaduna after a visit to some abattoirs, and other places where people burn tyres to extract cables and other metal objects has become a big business in the state.

He attributed the rise in this business to lack of awareness on the harmful effects of burnt tyres in dump sites, abattoirs and other places.

The Climatologist said the method of roasting slaughtered animals in abattoirs using tyres pollute the surrounding environment with hazardous emissions into the air, thereby posing serious threats to human health.

According to him, three main devastating effects of burning tyres in the environment include; air, water, and soil pollution, which has negative implications to residents of such community.

He said that the black fumes contain heavy metals and other harmful pollutants that linger in the air and can lead to acute or chronic health hazards.

Hoffman added that burning tyres has numerous health implications to humans, animals and other living organisms in the environment where the activities usually take place.

He called on the state and federal ministry of environment to checkmate the activities of people burning waste tyres in the community, and as well cautioned the youth to desist from the act during protest and celebration period.

He appealed to operators of abattoirs to embrace the new renewable technology in preparing slaughtered animals to save the environment against rising threats of climate change due to human irrational activities across the region.

“We must know that the use of burnt tyres in preparation of slaughtered animals and for other domestic use only adds to toxic burden in the atmosphere, put the lives of humans, animals and other living organism in danger.

“Community and religious leaders, women and youth organizations must team up and campaign against this harmful attitude,” he said.
