KADUNA, North-West Nigeria – The Fulani cultural group has won the 8th edition of the Womenhood College of Health Science and Technology Kaduna annual cultural day.
The event held at the college premises in Kaduna on Wednesday July 31, saw the students, friends, well wishers, family members and community members alike throng into the college to watch the array of cultural displays ranging from dances, playlet, dresses, and the different cuisines from Hausa, Fulani, Kanuri, Yoruba, Gbagi and Adara tribes as presented by the students.
Speaking on the sideline, the Provost of the College, Abdullahi Abdullah, said the event was the 8th edition, adding that the college has deemed it fit to sustained the annual event because of its students who are from different ethnic groups and backgrounds.
“The college admits students from different cultural backgrounds – the Gbagi, Adara, Hausa, Fulani, Kanuri, Igbo, Yoruba among others. A day like this was created so the students could learn from one another, in terms of dresses, foods, art, a way of life of other ethnic groups in the college.”
The Provost noted that the annual cultural activities is already uniting and bonding the students, to show others that, yes, we can still live as one united country as against what is happening in the nation today.
He disclosed that 60 per cent of the college students are Muslims, while 40 per cent are Christians, yet, with the high population of the Muslims, the immediate past Students Union President was a Christian, they voted for her because she’s competent, “This is the Nigeria I’ve been dreaming and yearning for. We should vote for someone based on his capacity and competency, not religion and ethnicity.”
Abdullah believed that the annual cultural activities will unite the students further and when others see it from the outside they will replicate same from the college. “Once some secondary schools and tertiary institutions start emulating from us, I believe one day the issue of religious and ethnic division in Nigeria will become history,” he assured.
Highlight of the event was the handing over of the former beauty Queen of the College, Maryam Argungu from Kebbi State, to the newly crowned queen, a first year student of Community Health Extension Work – Rukayya Yusuf, a Kanuri from Borno State.
