Education, Relevant Means To Tackle Early Child Marriage – UNICEF

KADUNA, North-West, Nigeria – The United Nations Children’s Fund, (UNICEF), has said education is a relevant means to tackle early child marriage in the country.

Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Kaduna, Dr. Zakari Adam, stated this on Thursday in Keffi, Nasarawa State, North-Central, Nigeria during a three-day capacity building for 30 of its partners on Result Based Management, (RBM).

Dr. Adam who said that education is the right of every child, appealed to parents, government and others to strive to provide good education for their girl-child in order to discourage early marriages for the overall development of the country.

According to him, education remained the best legacy parents and government could bequeath any child, stressing that the development of any society depended upon the quality of education given to the girl child.
He said that the aimed of the training was to equip participants with skills that would enable them achieved result based in their place of primary assignments towards tackling the plights of women and children.
He said that UNICEF is committed towards addressing the challenge faced by women and children in Nigeria in order to improve on their health status and standard of living.

“UNICEF is focusing on family, we have regard for that and we are committed to the government to create awareness with regard to children rights.

“Parents should ensure that their children are protected and are not put under unnecessary violence. Children are sent to school rather than being out of school.

“The issue of early marriage especially by female children should be discouraged. So any person who marry below the age of 18 years according to UN standard is regarded as early marriage.

“But unfortunately, some girls have been submitted to early marriage and this has resulted to huge consequences in terms of their health and education. It is an important issues faced by families and people,” he

Also speaking, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist, UNICEF Kaduna Field Office, Mr. Stanley Garuba, tasked the participants on productivity and results in their places of primary assignments.

“The RBM is applicable at every level, whatever we plan, let focus on result based as applied to women and children because this is basically UNICEF focus,” he admonished..
