Access bank, UBA top list as 7 banks receive 6.9m customer complaints

Seven banks in Nigeria have reportedly received a staggering 6.9 million customer complaints.
According to recent data, there has been a noteworthy surge in complaints received by banks. Specifically, there has been a 54 per cent increase, equating to 2.42 million more complaints than the previous year. In 2021, banks received a total of 4.48 million complaints.
The seven banks have been identified as Access Bank Holdings Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, Wema Bank Plc, Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, (UBA), Guaranty Trust Holding Company, (GTB), and Jaiz Bank Plc.  According to the bank’s annual financial reports to the Nigerian Exchange, the figures were extracted.
According to recent analysis, a total of 6.76 million complaints were resolved, while 142,636 were carried over to the year 2023.
In a recent data, Access Holdings Plc received the highest number of customer complaints, with a total of 2.82 million.  Following closely behind were United Bank for Africa Plc with 1.41 million complaints, and Guaranty Trust Holding Company with 1.01million complaints.
Zenith Bank, Wema Bank Plc, and Union Bank have also been recipients.
There were 475,499,404,179, and 673,709 complaints reported, respectively. Jaiz Bank Plc, the largest non-interest bank in Nigeria, has reportedly received a total of 118,429 complaints.
United Bank for Africa Plc, Access Holdings Plc, and Union Bank of Nigeria Plc have received significant refund requests from their customers. United Bank for Africa Plc tops the list with N86.34 billion, followed by Access Holdings Plc with N76.37 billion, and Union Bank of Nigeria Plc with N30.47 billion.
Guaranty Trust Holding Company, Zenith Bank Plc, and Wema Bank Plc have reportedly received refund demands from their customers. Guaranty Trust Holding Company’s refund demands amounted to N2.16 billion, while Zenith Bank Plc and Wema Bank Plc received refund demands of N27.58 billion and N1.47 billion respectively.
Jaiz Bank Plc recorded the lowest refund demand, with N863.09 million.  It should be noted that a majority of the refund requests were fulfilled.
