JOS, North-Central, Nigeria – The group,The Eye Opener Youth and Women Foundation, (TEO’s) Tobacco Abstinence Club, (TAC) Youth Team Lead in Plateau State, Sargwak Lamsing, has been awarded the Health Activist of the Year by the Nigerian Medical Laboratory Science Students Association, (NIMELSSA).
Lamsing was nominated in the category “NIMELSSA Hall of Fame Awards” where he emerged the recipient of the prestigious, ‘Health Activist of the Year Category for the fight against Tobacco’, at the 46th National Convention of the Association held at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu State, SouthEast Nigeria.
This came as Lamsing and his team took the campaign against tobacco use and substance abuse by youth, catching them young in orphanage homes in Jos, Plateau State capital.
Lamsing, a 300 level student of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, University of Jos, had between November/December collaborated with National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) in 2022, inaugurated Tobacco Abstinence Clubs, (TAC) in two orphanage homes namely; Kids with a Vision Orphanage Home at Rayfield, and the Child Love and Protection Advocacy Initiative, (CLAPAI), Orphanage Home at Dadin Kowa communities in Jos South Local Government Area respectively.
At the inauguration, the state TAC Team had sensitized inmates of the orphanage homes, creating awareness on the danger of smoking cigarettes and other psychoactive substances.
In his acceptance speech, Lamsing, said the award was a call to service to humanity, calling for more collaborations with Plateau State Government, like minded humanitarian Nongovernmental organizations, (NGOs) and Civil Society Organizations, (CSOs) as well as individuals to support the TAC team.
“I am grateful to God for the opportunity, and I thank all those who has found me worthy to be nominated for the award which I eventually emerged a winner.
“I call on young people to always believe in the course they’re fighting for. Whatever it is you are doing, someone out there is seeing it and one day your name would be mentioned somewhere and that will be a stepping stone to your journey in life,” Lamsing admonished youth.
The event was organized by the Nigerian Medical Laboratory Science Students Association, and supported by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria.
