KADUNA, North-West, Nigeria – Parents Teachers’ Association of Nigeria, (PTAN), has charged the Federal Government as well as State Governments to beef up security around primary and secondary schools in the country as students resume on Monday.
National President of PTAN, Haruna Danjuma, made the call in a statement made available to newsmen in Kaduna on Sunday, September 4, 2022.
He said the call became necessary in view of the fact that kidnapping, banditry and terrorism still persists, pointing out that schools are still soft targets of attacks.
“We are appealing to the Federal and State Governments to help us protect our children by providing adequate security at the schools,” he said.
The statement also noted that the “Covid-19 pandemic is still a big threat in the country, hence governments need to provide face masks, hand sanitizers, and also educate the students on social distancing.”
The PTAN president also appealed to the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) to go back to the negotiation table in order to end the on-going 6 months strike.
He commended the efforts of the Nigeria Army for it’s gallantry in tackling insecurity which is a great challenge bedevilling the country.
Danjuma equally reminded the Kebbi State Government and FG that some female students of the Federal Government Girls College, Yawuri, were still in captivity urging Governments to double efforts at rescuing the girls.
“These students are over 450 days now and no one is talking about them. In addition, there are still some school students in bandits’ den,” the statement declared.
