Alleged N109b fraud: ‘I thought I won’t be tried’ – Ex-AG-F Idris

ABUJA – The immediate past Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Ahmed Idris, has said he was under the belief that he would not be prosecuted in relation to the alleged N109billion fraud over which he is now being tried with three others.

Idris said he elected to cooperate with investigators from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and provide them with all the information they wanted to ease their investigation, with the belief that he would not be prosecuted.

He stated this in one of the 13 extra-judicial statements dated May 25, 2022 he made to EFCC investigators, which have now been tendered before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where he is being tried with others.

“All along, I have cooperated with the EFCC officials and have volunteered information to demonstrate my commitment to make the investigation as easier and speedy.

“Any statement I have made before or I am making now are based on my firm assumption, belief and understanding that by being open and aligning myself with statements made by principal suspects, such statements will not be used against me and eventually lead to my trial or prosecution.

“In view of foregoing statements, I wish to accept the met figure of N13.2billion I am confronted with, subject to the reservations expressed in this statement,” Idris stated.

His lawyer, Chris Uche (SAN) has objected to the admissibility of the statements, claiming that his client was hoodwinked by the investigators to make the statements , which contained some admissions.

Idris, his former Technical Assistant, Godfrey Olusegun Akindele; a director in the office of the AG-F, Mohammed Kudu Usman, and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited (said to be owned by Idris) are being tried by the EFCC on a 14-count charge bordering on stealing and criminal breach of trust to the tune of N109b.

At the last hearing in the ongoing trial-within-trial, being conducted to ascertain whether or not Idris offered the statements voluntarily, Uche insisted that the investigators promised his client that he would not be prosecuted.

But, one of the investigators, who interrogated the ex-AG-F, Mahmoud Tukur, denied Uche’s claim.

Tukur, the immediate past Head of Chairman Monitoring Unit (CMU) II of the EFCC testified as the second prosecution’s witness in the trial-within-trial on March 20.

“We did not promise him anything,” Tukur said in response to Uche’s claim.

Earlier, when asked by the prosecuting lawyer, Oluwaleke Atolagbe if he promised Idris that he (Idris) would not be prosecuted, Tukur denied ever making any promise to the former AG-F. “I never did. And, as the head of the unit, I can answer authoritatively to that. The first defendant was a senior public servant.

“He knows that it is not within my capacity to make such promises, because my duty is just to investigate and report my findings.

“In all the statements he wrote, he was cautioned and part of the cautionary words is that whatever he writes may be used as evidence in court,” Tukur said.

Another EFCC operative, Hayatudeen Suleiman, who was part of the investigation had, while testifying as the prosecution’s first witness in the trial-within-trial, also denied that any promise was made to Idris.

Electricity workers demand withdrawal of new tariff

ABUJA – The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), have asked the federal government to withdraw the new increase  of tariff, saying it will push the price of goods upwards and affect the poor.

Recall that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), had on April 3, increased electricity tariff for customers enjoying 20 hours of power supply daily, who are said to be under the “Band A” classification.

With the tariff increase, these customers are paying N225 kilowatt per hour from the current N66.

In a letter to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, NUEE described the increase as absurd for a country already facing steep increases in prices of goods and services.

The letter, signed by the union’s acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, said the increase would inadvertently push citizens to purchase foreign products as local products are beyond their reach.

The union said this would force companies that could withstand the low patronage to close down.

While calling for the withdrawal of the new tariff as it is not beneficial to Nigerians, NUEE said the safety of its members was at stake and at the risk of being attacked by people in the community when they visit for disconnections.

It alleged that the minister did not seek the input of stakeholders before the decision was made.

The letter reads in part: “The recent hike in electricity tariff from N68 /kwh to N225 /kwh is absurd in a country where the majority of the masses are grappling with basic survival and an electricity access rate of about 55%.

“The justification given by NERC is that the hike is attributed to only Band A consumers who make up only 15% of electricity consumers and utilize 40% of the nation’s electricity consumption.

“It begs to understand the sensibility of the person(s) that uttered such a statement purporting that it would not affect the general public.

“They need to answer these questions: Who are the Band A consumers? What do they do? Who are the customers of the Band A consumers? Who bears the brunt of the electricity hike? The general public is the one that will be most affected by this.

“They are the customers and end [1] users of the Band A products and services. The additional costs will be transferred to the common man, so they are indirectly being exploited, notwithstanding their dwindling purchasing power and increasing impoverishment.

“The Honourable Minister of Power and NERC didn’t consult with the stakeholders in the sector before the increase.

“What of Service Reflective Tariffs as it relates to consumers? We, as a stakeholder, do not know the energy policy of this present administration.

“As a critical stakeholder in the power sector who is concerned with Nigerians getting constant and affordable power supply, we state categorically that the hike in the electricity tariff is not beneficial to Nigerians and should be withdrawn.”

Meanwhile, the electricity generation in the country has nosedived to 2,775 megawatts, MW, yesterday, a 32.3 per cent decline from 4,099.87MW recorded last week.

This was contained in the data released by the Nigeria Electricity System Operator, (NESI), a semi-autonomous unit of the Transmission Company if Nigeria, (TCN).

Information supplied by the Independent System Operator, (ISO), showed that as at 6pm yesterday, load allocation to the eleven DisCos which stood at 2,775.00 Megawatts gave Abuja DisCo the highest allocation at 428MW, followed by Ikeja Electric at 422MW, Eko DisCo at 359MW, Ibadan DisCo at 335MW, Benin DisCo at 227MW and Enugu DisCo at 200MW.

The distribution companies with the lowest allocation were Yola DisCo at 79MW, Jos DisCo at 158MW, Kaduna DisCo at 181MW, Kano DisCo at 188MW and Port Harcourt DisCo at 198MW

Sen. Ahmad Abubakar MoAllahyidi is one of such great Nigerians, who represented Adamawa southern Senatorial District in the Senate between 2015-2019 comes readily to mind. A fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, a Certified Public Private Partnership Professional (IP3,Washington DC) also holds a Facility Management Professional (FMP) of (IFMA,USA). Moallayidi is a 1980 graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree with Honours in Quantity Surveying and an Masters Degree in Construction Management.
This amiable gentleman in the year 2010, pioneered the designed and institutionalization of a facility management course in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria (ABU). The Rehabilitation and start-up operations of Health and Medical Industries Jos, a company specializes in the manufacture of cotton wool, bandages and gauge.

It is the association of over 33,360 Ardos (The Fulbe Umbrella group) leaders across Nigeria.
The distinguished Senator was honored with the respected commander of Nigerian Students (CNS), an award by National Association of Nigerian Student, (NANS).

Gov Eno condoles family of late Nollywood make-up artist

UYO, South-South Nigeria – Following the demised of 24-year-old Nollywood make-up artist, Abigail Edith Frederick, who was among the victims of the ill-fated flying Boat that claimed the lives of six artists including popular actor, Junior Pope on the River Niger, Akwa Ibom Governor, Pastor Umo Eno has visited the family to offer his condolences.

Gov Eno, on arrival from an official engagement in Abuja, on Saturday April 13, drove straight to the family compound of late Abigail Edith Frederick, in Ikot Udoma, Eket Local Government Area, to console the bereaved family.

Showing deep emotions, Gov Eno, sat with the grieving family members, telling them that he felt their pain. “This is deeply unfortunate, a young girl, 24 years old, who, finished her Youth Service just last year, and decided to pursue her passion.

“This is a reflection of our Arise spirit. It shows that our young people are willing to go out there, not begging, not waiting for handouts, but to pursue their passions. It is sad that her life ended the way it did.

“Once I was fully briefed, I decided to come here personally with the full complement of Government to console and encourage you.

“You are not just the Governor when people are celebrating. In times and moments like this, you become the Mourner-in-Chief and give them hope.

“I trust the Holy Spirit will perfect the hope in their lives.

“Coming here means we care. You know Akwa Ibomites are like Americans. We don’t leave each other behind. Government will be with the family and support them,” he noted.

Gov Eno thereafter gave automatic employment in the State Civil Service to the surviving elder sister of the deceased and directed the SSA on Humanitarian Services, Umo Ekpo to renovate the family house and bring it to modern standard.

He also assured of Government’s assistance to the two sisters of the bereaved who are undergraduates at the University of Uyo, said to be sponsored by the deceased Nollywood make-up artist.

In a related development, the Governor demanded that the body of Abigail be exhumed and brought to the state for proper burial.

Reports have it that the body of Abigail Fredrick, who was among those involved in the boat accident alongside Junior Pope in Anambra State, has been recovered and laid to rest at the river bank.

According to the report, Abigail’s corpse and the cameraman were found on Thursday, April 11, following the tragic incident on Wednesday.

A film director, Moses Eskor, in a post via his social media page revealed that the family of the deceased could not afford the payment for certain traditional sacrifices for her corpse to be taken back home to Akwa Ibom.

He also said the money raised was insufficient for the traditional rites.

However, Governor Eno, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ekerete Udoh, demanded the Exhumation of Abigail’s corpse as soon as possible and be brought to him for proper and decent burial.

The statement reads, “His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, Governor, Akwa Ibom State, is aware of the boat mishap, which occurred a few days ago, on River Niger, involving some Nollywood actors and other supporting crew members while on a trip to a movie location.

“One of the victims of that accident, Miss Abigael Edith Frederick, was a quintessential example of our young people who have harkened to our clarion call for them to Arise and shine. She was a 24-year-old graduate of Theatre Arts, who had found her passion as a make-up artist.

“We are deeply saddened by her painful passing and on behalf of the Government and people of Akwa Ibom State, we sympathize with her family, the Nollywood community, and her friends and colleagues over this sad loss.

“We have also followed and read the reportage, especially on the social media platforms surrounding her burial, and wish to state categorically that, the government was not informed of the circumstances that led to her burial.

“His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno, has consequently directed that her body be brought back to her family for a proper and decent burial.

“As the famous theme song of the Liverpool Football Club goes, the bereaved family will not “walk alone”. May her soul rest in peace.”

MAIDUGURI, North-East, Nigeria – Mrs Aisha Bukar Gambo, a housewife in Gubio town, Gubio Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State, during the just concluded Ramadan period, caught her husband with his mistress ‘side chick’ on her matrimonial bed.
Devastated Mrs Gambo immediately reported the matter to her father who pleaded with her to concealed the matter from public knowledge, and urged her to return to her matrimonial home, which as an obedient daughter, she complied.
However, on the 27th day of Ramadan, which is the night every fasting Muslim faithful expects to achieve the peak of blessings from Allah, Mrs Gambo again, caught her husband in a nauseating act with yet, another mistress.
She then immediately called on neighbours and passers-by to witness the act, before she reported the matter to her father whom again urged her to concealed the matter from public knowledge and return to her husband to allow peace reign in her home.
Normally, Mrs Gambo would expect her husband and his mistresses to seek her forgiveness, placate her in whatever way they could to ensure she concealed the matter; but in a sharp contrast, one of the mistress and her relatives mobilized and challenged her for exposing her husband to the point of calling witnesses.
Tired of what was going on, Mrs Gambo confronted the mistress,  Yakolo Babagana, in her family house which resulted to some altercation with some members of Mai Mele’s family in Gubio town.
In the most-irritating audacity, the ‘side chick’, Falamata Mai Mele stabbed Mrs Gambo with a screwdriver on her left breast living her in the pool of her blood,  perhaps with intent of killing her.
On hearing this, Mrs Gambo’s father, Bukar Gambi, rushed to the police to come to the aid of his daughter after the mistress’s family brought more dangerous weapons.
In a statement, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Gubio stated: “On 11/04/2024 at about  2000hrs, one Bukar Gambi of Education Department in Gubio LGA came to police and reported that on the same date at about 1930 hourz, his daughter Aisha Bukar Gambo had some altercation with some members of Mai Mele’s Family in Gubio that during the fracas one Falamata Mai Mele stabbed Aisha with a screwdriver on the side of her left breast.
“During arrest members of the Mai Mele’s family were brandishing knives and cutlasses until the support of the military was sought, which led to the arrest and detention of some of the suspects, as well as the principal suspects Yakolo Babagana Mai Mele.
“Two cutlasses were recovered as exhibits while the victim was admitted at the Primary Health Care Center Gubio for Medical Attention while investigation is ongoing.”

LAGOS, South-West Nigeria – No fewer than seven persons were drowned The Lagos State within six days, police Spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin has said.

SP Hundeyin confirmed this on Friday that seven persons drowned at different swimming pools and beaches in the state within six days.

“This week alone, seven people drowned in hotel swimming pools and beaches. Two drowned in one hotel in Mushin and one in a hotel on Lagos Island.

“One also drowned at Ibeshe Island, two fell into Third Mainland Bridge in an accident and one in a hotel in Shasha,” he noted.

He said the deaths were avoidable if all the necessary safety measures were put in place and observed.

Hundeyin urged the hoteliers in particular, to employ lifeguards and have lifeguards off duty sign on display when necessary at their facilities.

He also advised visitors to hotels to always read instructions on hotel facilities, particularly the swimming pool, to avoid fatality.

GERMANY – The police in Germany have arrested three teenagers on suspicion of planning an Islamist-motivated terror attack.
Prosecutors said the teenagers, two girls aged 15 and 16 and a 15-year-old boy, were arrested as they were “strongly suspected of planning an Islamist-motivated terror attack and of having committed to carrying it out”.
A statement by the prosecutor on Friday said the three teenagers from Dusseldorf region are believed to have been planning crimes of “murder and manslaughter,” as well as preparing “a serious act of violence endangering the state.”
The state’s Central Office for the Prosecution of Terrorism sought an arrest warrant for the teenagers over the Easter holiday.
They had formed a chat group and had not set a date or place for the attack, but investigators said they “certainly saw the danger.”
The trio were allegedly planning to carry out attacks on worshippers in churches and on police stations using knives and Molotov cocktails in following the ideology of the ISIS group.
The teenagers were also weighing whether to obtain firearms, the mass circulation daily reported.
German authorities arrested three people in January over an alleged plot to attack the cathedral in Cologne on New Year’s Eve.
Last month, police detained two Afghan citizens linked to ISIL for allegedly planning to attack police near the Swedish parliament in response to the burning of copies of the Quran.
Police in northern Germany said on Thursday they were offering a 5,000-euro ($5,330) reward for providing information concerning an arson attack on a synagogue in the city of Oldenburg last week.

2024 Limb Loss Day: Millions of Nigerian amputees face soaring prosthetic costs – NAPWPD

KADUNA, North-West, Nigeria – The Association of Persons with Physical Disability (NAPWPD), has raised the alarm on the soaring prices of artificial legs and other prosthetic limbs, saying this is causing concern among patients, particularly as the world marks the International Limb Loss Day.
The National President of NAPWPD, Comrade Rilwan Abdullahi, expressed the concern at a Sallah Get-together and Zumunci gathering to promote unity and togetherness among members at the Rehabilitation Board in Kaduna on Saturday.
He emphasized the urgent need to raise awareness among the general public on the factors contributing to increasing number of amputees in the country.
He gave such factors to include: daily road accidents, cancer diseases, industrial accidents, peripheral vascular disease, diabetes, blood clots, osteomyelitis, as well as conflicts related to various socio-political factors.
He Highlighted the importance of using such gathering to bring awareness, education, hope, and encouragement to those living with limb loss and their supporters.
He explained that Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness month is celebrated worldwide to recognize amputees and provide them with opportunities to live without limits. “The purpose of this Sallah event is to strengthen unity among all clusters of persons with disabilities and to raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by those living without limbs.
“Additionally, the focus is on drawing attention to the importance of limb loss prevention in health and safety practices,” he said.
According to Abdullahi, the cost of purchasing walking aids for amputees is extremely high, and this has forced many to resort to makeshift tools like sticks, wood from trees to aid their walk on the streets.
He added that the cost of artificial limbs in Nigeria and Africa is exorbitant, necessitating support from governments, wealthy individuals, and corporate organizations to assist patients by providing them with artificial limbs.
The high cost of artificial limbs, Abdullahi also said, could be attributable to the following: “the customization required for each individual, considering factors such as age and specific needs;
“Not all amputees can afford artificial limbs due to their scarcity and high costs, which is why we are calling for help from all stakeholders;
“The high cost of the dollar has also impacted the supply of artificial limbs from abroad,” he added.
The NAPWPD National President said losing a limb can have profound physical and mental effects on individuals, with more than 80 per cent of amputees experiencing chronic pain that can be as debilitating as the original injury.
Also speaking, the State Chairman of Persons with Disability (PwDs), Comrade Suleman Abdulaziz, highlighted the importance of annual Sallah gatherings in promoting education and inclusion among members in the state.
He urged the state and federal governments to include PwDs in all aspects of human endeavors, stressing their desire to be involved in activities related to the development of the state.
Furthermore, he emphasized the need for more assistance for the mental anguish experienced by amputees due to limb loss. “we want to be inclusive in every thing related to peace, development and success in Kaduna and Nigeria,” he said.

LAGOS, South-West, Nigeria – The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), a fully loaded 40-feet Mack articulated truck fell on a Nissan Car with registration number: ABJ 692 BG and instantly killed a woman at the rear of the car while the car driver survived unhurt.

The accident occured in Alapere, Lagos on Friday morning.

A statement issued by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed that the driver of the Mack articulated truck with his motor-boy ran away immediately the fatal accident occurred.

Taofiq said: “Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of Mack articulated 40 ft fully loaded container, while on a high speed lost control as a result of a brake failure and rammed into a moving Nissan car on motion by N.N.P.C inward Alapere, Ogudu along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Lagos,” Taofiq said.

He added that LASTMA officer, Alabi Olukayode (Zone 2, Ogudu/Alapere) disclosed that the agency handed over the evacuated dead body (woman) to Police men from Alapere Police Station.

According to Zebra Alabi Olukayode, “LASTMA officials and passers-by including the LASEMA Response Unit (LRU) were involved in the rescue operations.

MAIDUGURI, North-West, Nigeria – The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has bursted illegal water vendors who had constructed specialized dams manipulating the distribution network to trap water pumped for public use to gain commercial benefits.
The governor made the discovery during a surprise visit to communities in Jere and Maiduguri Metropolitan city on Thursday.
The vendors were artificially creating water shortages to inflate prices and maximize their profits while citizens suffer.
“It is unfortunate to notice that while the government spend millions to provide water to the people, few individuals have constructed a specialized dams, most with multiple layers of reservoirs. Some of them can store more than one million litres of water.
“Every day, our treatment plant process and distribute about 40 million litres of water; these criminals trap the larger amount of those supplies for commercial gain,” Zulum said
