KADUNA, North-West, Nigeria – A middle aged woman simply identified as Rahmatu is in Police net for inflicting pains on a 5 year-old child (f), who was under her care at Anguwan Dosa in Kaduna North Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Investigation revealed that the child had unconsciously defecated on her bed after being given three tablets of Flagil by her aunty who claimed to be a Nurse with a private hospital (names withheld) when the child complained of running stomach.

Further investigations revealed that, the child, Zainab (not her real name) was sometimes ago brought from Maiduguri to Kaduna by the same woman that inflicted physical injuries on her.

A neighbour had alerted a Non-governmental Organisation, Umukhail Foundation who rushed to the house to rescue the child and then drew the attention of the State’s Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development (MWASD).

When contacted, the State Commissioner, MWASD, Hajiya Hafsat Baba, who confirmed the development said, the child had been treated at the Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital, and now in safe custody pending when her father will come from Maiduguri, Borno State.

The Commissioner added that the husband of the culprit was arrested along as he watched his wife inflict pains on the child, saying if found guilty he will become an accomplice punishable under the new Child Welfare and Protection Law of Kaduna State.
“When we got the report from a non-governmental organisation this morning, fortunately there are some security personnel on ground who went to the house and arrested the lady and her husband.”

“Immediately they brought the child, I took her to Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital here in Kaduna for medical examination and treatment because she may be having internal injury.

“She has been treated and examined and she is now in safe custody pending the time her father will come from Maiduguri.

“Presently, the woman that did that to her is in police custody in Kawo together with her husband. We hope the child will get justice because the woman will be charged to court after investigation.

“This will serve as a deterrent to others and remind the people that, the child protection law in Kaduna state is in force and implementation has commenced”, she said.
