KADUNA, North-West, Nigeria – The Youth Focal Person, Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiatives, (NURHI), Kaduna Office, Aisha Waziri, has said young persons are hindered from life saving reproductive health components such as counselling which could have help shape their lives, by distance to services, cost of services, knowledge, attitude and practice barriers.

She stated this during a paper presentation at the Life Planning for Adolescents and Youth, (LPAY) sensitization workshop for Journalists in Kaduna on Tuesday, July 17, 2018,

Waziri added that the Phase Two project of NURHI’s, LPAY will provide positive life transforming information that will impact on adolescents and youth today and in future.

She said the most critical stage in human development is adolescence because it is characterized by peer pressure which often lead to experimentation.


The Youth Focal Person disclosed that in Kaduna state, young persons are primarily influenced by their parents, teachers, friends, social media, and spouses for those that are married.

“Young persons are hindered from life saving reproductive health components such as counselling to help them shape their lives, by distance to services, cost of services, knowledge, attitude and practice barriers.

“Life planning arms young people with positive life changing information that can help them make informed choices about critical issues in life and future.

“About 55 per cent of Nigerian population is under 20 years of age. Proportion of adolescent engaging in unprotected sex is male 48.per cent, girls 56 per cent.

“Laws and policies are prohibiting young people from access to such services and information, ” she said.
