FRCN Staff Protests Obsolete Equipment In Stations

KADUNA, North-West, Nigeria – Staff of the Federal Radio Corporation, (FRCN), Kaduna National station have expressed dismay over obsolete equipment especially transmitters, generator and poor staff welfare, calling on the Federal Government to come to their aid.
In a nationwide protest held simultaneously on Monday, July 9, 2018, to agitate for the replacement of about 60 years old obsolete equipments, and good working condition, the Unions comprising of Radio,Television and Theatre Arts Workers Union, (RATTAWU) and the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) FRCN Chapel, said their members welfare is nothing to write home about.

Addressing protesters, Chairperson of RATTAWU, Kaduna chapter, Hajiya Halima Abdulmumini, condemned the attitude of Management towards welfare of workers and called on the Federal Government to relocate FM stations situated in bad terrain to economically viable environments to strategically boost revenue of the stations.
She also noted that there is a need for immediate purchase of new staff buses and operational vehicles that will convey reporters to assignments.

Similarly, Chairman of NUJ Chapel of FRCN, Comrade Salisu Ibrahim, said that the protest emanated from an in-house media summit held between May 9 – 11, 2018 in Ilorin, Kwara State, North-Central Nigeria, pointing out that the meeting have been on for a number of years and communiques were issued with no meaningful results.

He however said this year’s summit looked critically into working condition of staff including welfare and equipment of stations of FRCN nationwide, and the Unions finally communicated to the authority concern which culminated to today’s protest to voice out their concerns.

According to Comrade Ibrahim, all what the Unions are agitating for is replacement of obsolete equipments with modern ones, better staff welfare and good working condition.

“This protest is going on simultaneously in all the FRCN Zonal and FM Stations nationwide, meaning that at the end our voices must be heard by the authorities concern.

“It is our hope that FRCN will be a better place for everybody to desire to work like other places we admire and envy,” he said.

In his remarks, the Zonal Director, FRCN Kaduna, Alhaji Buhari Auwalu commended the staff for the peaceful manner which the protest is carried out, saying that it is an indication that FRCN is populated by matured minds and not people given to youthful exuberance.

According to him, it is true that FRCN needed to be upgraded, and commended the staff for the matured manner the protest was being handled and also assured the Unions that their letter will be channel to appropriate authority.
