Int’l Women’s Day: Group To Enlighten Women Tackle Gender-Based Violence In Kaduna Community

KADUNA, North-West, Nigeria – A Non-Governmental Organization, EL-VOW Foundation in partnership with De Raheem Foundation, has said it will empower women through enlightenment in tackling sexual and gender based violence.

The group said already modalities have been put in place to train 30 women from Chikun Local Government Area of the state to become El-VOW Community Women and Girls Champion, ( ECWGC) ambassadors, as it is believed that females who are fully aware of their human, political and legal rights can strive to become equal in their communities.

Executive Director of EL-VOW, Theresa Biniyat, disclosed during the 2020 Int’l Women’s Day celebration in Kaduna on Monday.

Biniyat, who said the objective of the day is to join the rest of the world in celebrating IWD with a theme: “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights,” added that this is in line with the Global Goals 5 which targets gender equality by 2030 in developing countries.

She also said this is a goal her organization is working to achieve through it programmatic activities, in partnership with other organizations in the State.

The EL-VOW boss explained that the programme will include sessions centered on equality, leadership, education, self-development, safety and security to help equip the beneficiaries with skills on socio-economic and how to approach law enforcement, legal practitioners and sexual assault support groups whenever faced with cases of sexual and gender-based abuses.

The IWD 2020 theme: “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Right,” is hinged on creating a gender equal world and it is a day set aside to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. It is also a day for a call of action to accelerate gender equality.
