MAIDUGURI, North-East, Nigeria – Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has directed the immediate suspension of 200 primary school teachers from Bama Local Education Authority.
He however rewarded two female volunteer teachers with university scholarship in the same place for their commitment and dedication to duty in their comminuties.
The governor’s directive follows a surprise visit to the schools where he undertook a direct enumeration of teachers in primary schools in the Local Government Area and discovered that the affected teachers have been away from duty for over a year even after the security situation in the areaa was restored.
Bama is one of the LGAs reclaimed by the Nigeria military from Boko Haram since 2014.
“We have also in Bama visited the eight primary schools there, and found out that out of about 300 teachers working there, only 100 were punctual and always in school.
“About 200 of them are nowhere to be found. They are completely not on ground. We have made our investigations and our findings confirmed that for the past year, nobody has seen them.
“Therefore, the government will suspend all 200 of them, and we shall recruit 200 graduates looking for teaching jobs in their place and we shall ensure that normal academic activities resume in Bama,” Zulum explained.
The Borno helmsman who was excited, noted that while some teachers on government payroll stayed out of work for one year, the two secondary school leavers were selfless in helping their communities.
This selfless service to humanity as displayed by the two young ladies caught the attention of the Governor whi ordered immediate award of scholarship to university level for them who hitherto could not afford university education.
