JIGAWA, North-West, Nigeria – Over fifty houses at the Mallam Inua Dutse Housing Estate in Dutse, the Jigawa state capital were destroyed including cars and property among others occasioned by last Thursday’s heavy downpour.

Other areas affected by the flood include: Taura, Birnin-Kudu, Buji, and Miga Local Government Areas which rendered over five hundred thousand households homeless, while farm produce worth billions of naira were destroyed.

The State’s Acting Governor, Alhaji Umar Namadi who visited the Estate to commiserate with the victims, assured them of government’s immediate intervention.

According to him; “This year’s flood calamities is a source of concern which we must control to avoid spillover,” he said.

The Acting Governor directed the state Relief Maintenance Agency to as a matter of urgency swing into action in rendering prompt assistance to the affected victims, and as well take inventory to ascertain the total damages caused by the flood for prompt actions.

Some of the victims who spoke to this Reporter lamented that they were yet to recover from last year’s predicament as the State Government failed to assist them.

“We went through last year’s flood incidents without any assistance, nor positive response from the State Government towards containing the situation.

“We hope this time around the government will take cogent steps in tackling the situation,” the victims said.

However, investigation revealed that lack of drainages, and blockage of the existing water ways within the Estate, and the affected councils were some of the factors causing flooding in these places.
