INEC to Kaduna Electorate, No Card Reader, No Vote

KADUNA, North-West, Nigeria – The Kaduna State Resident Electoral Commissioner, (REC), Kaugama Abdullahi has given a matching order for strict use of Card Readers by electorate during the March 9 elections, saying electorate will not be allowed to vote without the system.

He disclosed this while briefing newsmen at the Commission’s Secretariat in Kaduna on Friday, where he reiterated the commission’s readiness to conduct a free, fair and credible elections come March 9, 2019.

The REC explained that at the last Presidential, N’Assembly elections in the state, the Commission’s ad-hoc staff in most communities were forced to conduct election under duress without the use of card readers by electorate.

He further said that in every polling unit, the Commission has made adequate backup for malfunction card readers in the coming elections.

“Reports from some of our staff has shown that some people in most communities in Kaduna state exercise their franchise without the use of Card Reader. The aim of card reader is to authenticate the Permanent Voters Card, (PVC).

“Anywhere Card Readers fail and it could not be replaced immediately, the elections will continue the next day with a functional one”, Kaugama said.

According to him, 812,000 card readers have been deployed to the 23 Local Government Areas of the state with 34,000 ad-hoc staff to ensure hitch-free elections.

“We have responsible collation and returning officers who will ensure that the processes are free, fair and credible”, he emphasized.

In his remarks, the Kaduna State Police Commissioner, Ahmed Abdulrahaman also assured residents of safety before, during and after elections in the state, and called for their cooperation to help get rid of thuggery during the forthcoming elections, adding that the Force is in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure peaceful guber polls.
