Elections Postponement: NUJ Express Concern Over INEC’s Preparedness

By: Mayen Etim

KADUNA, North-West, Nigeria – As reactions continue to trail the sudden postponement of the presidential and N’Assembly elections, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) has expressed concerned over INEC’s ability to conduct credible elections in the country.

NUJ in a statement signed by its National Secretary, Shuaibu Usman Leman, on Saturday said the last minute hasty postponement of the process, by the electoral umpire citing logistics problems and operational hiccups is ridiculous decision.
According to the statement; “It is instructive to note that INEC had before now, consistently assured Nigerians and the International community of its preparedness to give Nigerians free and fair elections.
“It is therefore pertinent to request for more explanations as to why such a grossly unconventional decision was taken.
“We call on all journalists to maintain calm and remain resolute in the discharge of their assignments especially as they relate to election matters.”
