KADUNA, North-West, Nigeria – Investigation ongoing to ascertain the mental state of a young woman who allegedly set own daughter ablaze in Kaduna State over a trivial offence.
Available information revealed that 8-year old Chinwendu (real name withheld) was asked by her mother to take care of her two siblings while she went out to attend to her business.
But, when she left the house, the 8-year old also left for a neighbour’s house to watch a television series allowing her siblings to turn their home upside down before arrival of mother.
The already exhausted mother who became enraged upon sighting the state of her apartment, poured premium motor spirit also known as petrol on the girl and set her ablaze as punishment.
Investigation further revealed that the mother refused to convey the burnt child to the hospital for medical help, rather she locked her up for six days before a good Samaritan raised the alarm which attracted men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps. (NSCDC) and got her arrested while the child is now recuperating at the emergency unit of a specialist hospital in Kaduna.
When Daily News Precise visited the girl in the hospital on Wednesday, wife of the state Governor, Arch. Hadiza El-Rufai, expressed shock and directed that the woman be taken to psychiatric hospital in Barnawa, for mental examination.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Hafsat Baba, confirmed to Daily News Precise on Wednesday evening that, the woman is presently cooling off at the NSCDC’s custody for investigation.
“It was shocking and unimaginable that a mother could do such to her own daughter. We are not sure if other children are safe around her. In fact, information reaching us revealed that, there was a time the girl’s hand was burnt because she lied to her mother.
“But the girl was lucky this time around. Good Samaritan reported the case to my ministry and we swung into action immediately. The mother is presently in the custody of the NSCDC for investigation”, the commissioner hinted.
As at the time Daily News Precise visited the injured at the hospital on Thursday, the medical team have already commenced treatment on the 8-year old.
