KADUNA, North-West, Nigeria – A former member, House of Representatives representing Makarfi/Kudan Federal Constituency of Kaduna State, Hon. Isa Ashiru, has emerged the Governorship Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State.

The former lawmaker who was also, former Governorship Aspirant of All Progressives Congress, (APC) in the 2015 elections polled 1,330 votes out of 2,547 votes cast to emerge the party’s flag bearer.

However, the immediate past Governor of the state, Alhaji Mukhtar Ramalan Yero was disgraced in the poll, as he scored 36 votes.

Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi representing Kaduna North in upper chamber of the National Assembly came second in the gubernatorial primary with 564 votes.

Hunkuyi recently defected from the ruling APC to the opposition PDP at the peak of his feud with Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai.

Senator Hunkuyi was closely followed by the immediate past Director General of National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA), Alhaji Mohammed Sani Sidi who polled 560 votes.

A business mogul, Alhaji Shuaibu Idris Mikati scored 16 votes, while former Athoney General of the state and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Jonathan Kish Adamu scored two (2) votes.

Chairman of PDP Primary Election Committee, Mr. Philip Aivoji, while declaring Ashiru as the party’s candidate said 39 invalid votes were recorded, while no votes was recorded for the remaining two aspirants.

According to Aivoji, Alhaji Ja’afaru Sa’ad and Dr. Mohammed Sani Bello had withdrawn from the race as the poll commenced on Sunday.

Delivering his acceptance speech, the candidate, Hon. Isa Ashiru expressed appreciation to the delegates and the party for the confidence reposed in him to fly the party’s flag.

He however assured that, he will carry his contenders along in his campaign team, as well as in government if elected the next Governor of Kaduna State.

Ashiru while saying that, his emergence will surely bring victory to the PDP, harped on the unity of the party, saying that, it only in unity the party can defeat the incumbent.

“I am humbled to be the one saddled with the responsibility of flying the flag in the forthcoming 2019 governorship election. Therefore, I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the entire delegates for the confidence reposed in me.
“I wish to assure you that I will never betray this trust, and I promise to be a worthy ambassador in the conduct of my public affairs.
“My emergence as the party’s flag bearer sign post the resolve and determination of our members to restore the party back to it lost glory, and reassert its mandate as the ruling party in Kaduna State come 2019,” he said.

The primaries which gave Ashiru the mandate lasted for 23 hours and witnessed all aspirants with their agents and INEC representatives in attendance to monitor the proceedings.

The contestants are former Governor of Kaduna state Dr. Ramalan Yero Ja’afaru Sa’ad.Shuaibu Yakubu, , Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, Mohammed Sani Sidi, Barrister Jonathan Kish Adamu a one time Attorney General of Kaduna State, Dauda Ahmadu Ibrahim, Muhammad Sani Bello and Muhammed Bello Umar.

While the primaries was in progress, and with 20 local governments delegates to cast their votes out of the 23 local government, Jafar Sa’ad and Muhammad Bello Umar respectively withdrew from the race, urging the delegates to vote wisely in the interest of the Party.
Breakdown of the results is as follows:Ja’afaru Sa’ad. – withdrew, Shuaibu Yakubu Miqat – 16 votes, Isa Ashiru – 1,330 votes ,Senator ,Suleiman Hunkuyi – 564 votes ,Mohammed Sani Sidi – 560 votes ,Jonathan Kish Adamu -Dauda Ahmadu Ibrahim -0, Muhammad Sani Bello -0 , Muhammed Bello Umar – withdraw,and Muktar Ramalan Yero – 36 Votes
