Mob Sets Church, Police Station Ablaze In Kaduna Over Death Of Youth

KADUNA, North-West, Nigeria – Angry mob numbering about 200 has set ablazed a church and a Police Outpost Station in Narayi, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Thursday, 22nd March, 2018 morning over the death of a youth in the area.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Kaduna Command, ASP Aliyu Mukhtar disclosed this while speaking to the media.

According to him, the police have arrested five persons suspected to be among the over 200 mob who stormed the church and razed it down, then proceeded to the Police Station to demand for the release of the 78 year-old presiding pastor of the church whose name is given as Babatunde Shittu.

The mob accused the pastor, Babatunde Shittu of having a hand in the death of the youth, Friday Sylvester.

ASP Mukhtar added that upon receiving the distressed call of what was happening in the area, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Austin Iwar, immediately directed the Deputy Commissioner in-charge of Operations and other top police officers to the area for an on the ground assessment.

The Police spokesman warned that the Command will not allow any person or group of persons to take the law into their hands; adding that the CP has ordered full investigation and prosecution of those involved.

Trouble started when over 200 youth in the early hours of Thursday stormed a white garment church and set it ablaze over the death of a youth in the area who was working for the church when he got drown and died.

The youth later moved to the Narayi Police Station and demanded that the police handover the presiding pastor of the church to them, however the police refused; saying he is in their protective custody. 

This did not go down well with the youth who suspected foul play in the death of the young man.   They were said to have mobilized and touched a part of the police station, vandalized a vehicle belonging to a police officer within the premises.

“The youth besides touching the Police Station, made away with no fewer than seven motorcycles belonging to their personnel as well as vandalizing a Honda Accord vehicle belonging to an officer.”
