FG Subsidizing Participation Of States At National Youth Games – Perm Sec

KADUNA, North-West, Nigeria – In view of the importance it attached to sports development in the country, the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development is investing millions of Naira in subsidizing the participation of states in the National Youth Games.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development who was represented by the Director Grassroots Sports Development, Dr. Ademola Are, disclosed while briefing newsmen on Thursday in Ilorin, Kwara State, North-Central, Nigeria.
He said that the attention of the ministry was drawn to various media publications about challenges the Games was facing, especially accommodation, clarifying that the reports were mostly exaggerated.
“The Ministry in realization of the importance of the games in talent hunting great athletes for our country’s future presence in international competitions, is investing millions of Naira in subsidizing the participation of the states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“We admit there were initial issues about the quality of accommodation at the diversity hostels. The issues were quickly resolved and the games proceeded without further hiccups.

“There were mechanisms put in place to handle routine complaints that may occur in the organization of events of this magnitude. Remarkably, the complaints have been minimal,” he said

Speaking further, he said that Under Rule 16 of the National Youth Games, each athlete or official that stays in the Games Village pays N15,909 fee to augment the cost of registration, and feeding for the 10-day duration of the games.

He appreciated the media and the public who have shown interest in the games, that are meant to harness generations of world-class athletes for various national teams.
