KADUNA, North-West, Nigeria – Nigeria’s Under-21 team and host of the Africa Nations Cup Volleyball championships, Wednesday, September 12, 2018, put smiles on the faces of Volleyball fans and sports lovers generally, when the team came from two nil sets down to pick the maximum points in Group A by beating Cameroon 3-2 sets.
Cameroon took the first two sets at 26 – 24, and 25 -23 in a match that not only embarrassed but nearly humiliated the entire country including Minister of Youth and Sports Barrister Solomon Dealing and other dignitaries including international Volleyball Federation officials who watched with surprise as the host National team grappled in the court.
The first two sets saw Cameroon calling the shots with powerful services, blocks at the net, effective spikes, while Nigeria picked points from the mistakes of the Cameroonians. The host nation no doubt played under tension and nervousness as the bench appeared unsettled.
But hosts with two 0-2 sets down played like wounded lions as they displayed outlandish skill which earned them points and spurred the team to draw level by winning the third and fourth sets at 25-21 and 25-16.
The matches at two sets either way was sufficient to ginger host to put superlative performance in the decider when the Cameroonians bowed at 15-9.
The indoor Sports Hall of Package B, National Stadium Abuja erupted with dancing and cheering of every move by Nigerian boys.
